Brass Instrument Repairs

Brass instrument repairs are a common part of owning an instrument made of this material. Because it is easily formed, it is excellent for creating the tight and complex tubing that allows a large variety of sounds and instrument styles, which make up the horn sections of many bands. However, because brass is so easily formed, it is also very easily damaged. Moreover, because of the nature of being wind instruments, an immense amount of moisture gets inside of the tubing, which can cause rust, damaging the instrument from the inside.

One of the most common repairs is to fix dents. This involves pushing the metal back into its correct form and smoothing it out. For the most part, depending upon how severe the dent is, the horn should still play just fine without any repairs. Many of these will thus be cosmetic, but it should be noted that the horn will not play perfectly and depending upon your level of performance and skill, you may want to have every dent up fixed.

Another common repair is rust treatment. This can be quite simple to deal with or very complex, it all depends on how deep the rust has saturated the metal. This can lead to simply buffing the piping or scraping the horn entirely. Good preventative maintenance is very vital to making sure this doesn’t happen as you may lose the instrument. This includes regular cleaning with pipe cleaners, proper oiling, and never allow the instrument to sit for long periods. The more complex the tubing, the greater risk of rust.
